Last weekend, 14 Scouts and 2 leaders from across the Borough took part in the prestigious National Scout Shooting Competition, held at Bisley, Surrey. With over 760 Scouts and Explorer Scouts taking part, the weekend was going to be a busy one!
We arrived on Friday evening, set up the tents after which we had a briefing by John Dohoo (National Scout Shooting Adviser) about the format of the weekend, along with safety rules etc.
There are a number of competitions that you can take part in, the main competition consists of 4 disciplines:
- Air pistol
- Air rifle 6 yd
- Field Target air rifle
- Knockdown air rifle
All 14 scouts took part in the above.
We also had a number of Explorer Scouts who also competed in the Small Bore Competition.
The weekend was very busy with the leaders ensuring that each Scout was in the correct place to take part in their round of shooting at the correct time – not an easy task with over 760 youngsters to herd!
The results;
Our Senior B Team, consisting of Daniel Little, Matthew Lewsley and Emily Matthews came a very respectable 23rd out of 112 teams, and Daniel also secured the 3rd place in the Field Target competition – very worthy of a medal.
5 of our team progressed through to the 3rd round of the Knockdown competition and competed against the remaining 125 top UK scout shooters.
In the Small – Bore competition, Matthew Freeman came 15th out of 45 competitors and Gaby Lake achieved an excellent 9th place.
WELL DONE to all the competitors, the training has certainly paid off and I am sure we will do even better next year.
Hopefully next year we will be able to take more Scouts from the borough, and our District Shooting Club, open to all Scouts & Explorer Scouts, is open every Sunday evening in East Barnet from 19.30 to 21.30 for air rifle and small-bore practise. All scouts can gain their Master at Arms badge, as well as learning a new skill which will help with the various progressive awards and D of E and Queens Scout Award – Further details from Ian Tolfree 020 8440 1096
