On Sunday 20th September, Enfield Scout Sailing
Association hosted the first ever Barnet Borough Cubs Raft race. Cubs built
their own rafts in the morning with help - or was it hindrance - from Leaders? Some Leaders may benefit from a refresher in knotting and lashing!
During the
lunch break the rafts were inspected for safety and sea worthiness. The
afternoon saw the Cubs paddling their rafts through several heats. With rafts
slowly falling apart throughout the afternoon, hasty repairs were continuously made
to keep them afloat.
Congratulations to the eventual winning team The Barrel
Boys from 1st Barnet, with The Sinkers from 10th Finchley
second and The Boosters from 1st/3rd New Barnet third.
Many thanks to Marion and her safety crew for collecting parts of
disintegrating rafts and rescuing Cubs.
Special thanks to the Young Leader Amy
Austin, and her trusty clipboard, who sorted out the teams for each race,
collated all scores and generally kept the Cubs in order. |

On the evening of Tuesday 2nd June nearly 80 Cubs, from just 6 Packs, attended the Barnet Borough District Dragon Boat & Rafting evening at Enfield Scout Sailing Association (ESSA). After a short safety brief and some paddling instruction the Cubs were split into teams of between 8 – 10 and paddled 2 dragon boats around
the central lagoon. After some practice paddling, along with tuition and encouragement from trained helms, all of the Cubs (most of which this being the first time of any sort of water activity) improved immensely within the short time period..
In between paddling the dragon boats the Cubs, with a little help from Leaders, also built their own rafts from barrels, poles & rope. These were then launched and paddled around the lagoon – yes they all the rafts floated and didn’t fall apart. although a few enthusiastic Cubs did get a little wet !
Many thanks to whoever sorted the glorious sunny weather and to all those Lea ders and Parents that helped out in some way to make the evening so successful and enjoyable, whether it be dragon boat helms, raft making & supervision, safety boat crews or serving in the kitchen & tuck shop.
