Barnet Scouts played their part in this year's Remembrance day events and for the first time in many years, there was a small representation at the official Barnet ceremony held at Barnet Church, in Barnet High Street. The group of 8 Explorer Scouts were invited to join representatives of the other youth groups in the Borough (such as the St Johns, Army, RAF cadets) and the Territorial Army, for which we were very grateful. Scouts do not march any more and so we followed behind the other groups as they marched through the High Street with accompaniment from the Hill Hill School CCF band.
Remembrance this year is especially poignant for many as some of our youngsters have family members serving in areas of conflict.
A wreath was laid on behalf of the Scouts of Barnet Borough District along with wreathes laid by other dignitaries and organizations.
Many Scouts and Scouters of all ages took part in their own local services and events of Remembrance and many groups will have discussed the relevance and meaning of these events in their own groups as part of the balanced programme.
An aim of Scouting is to help our young people become active and valuable members of our community and it was a pleasure for our young people to represent the District at this important event.

On a lovely sunny weekend in Norfolk 4 of our excellent young leaders ran a camp for some lucky Golders Green Scouts. Mark, George, Chris and James took charge of the younger Scouts to ensure they had a tonne of activities to keep them busy. After getting to Norfolk and putting up their tents all the Scouts crashed out - only to end up waking up at six in the morning! It was decided that they needed to be worn out, so they went from obstacle course, to river cruise, to hike and ended the day playing beach games until late into the night.
Sure enough it worked, and they were not so keen to wake the leaders up at six the next morning - going for a more respectable nine! There was no time to rest, as it was rafting next - followed by tidying up and finally, a surprise stop (there is always a surprise on young leader camps) for some quad biking and karting.
This was the first camp in the Young Leader training programme where Young Leaders have worked with a real live Scout Group - and it is not surpsining (as they do it every week) it was a great success - with one of the young Scouts proclaiming it was his best Scout Camp ever.
If you are running a Beaver, Cub or Scout group and you haven't got the time, energy or ideas you need to run a camp - then why not yet the young leaders lend a hand. It gives them some formal training towards their modules, and also benefits the younger members too. Get in touch with

The weekend of 5th April saw the 2nd young leader training camp of the year, and the third event of the year offered to Explorer Scouts in the District. The idea of the young leader training scheme is to provide the young people that are helping out in other sections the skills and confidence they require to make excellent leaders of tomorrow. Additionally, it is a way for the District to say thank-you for all the hard work that these super-keen youngsters put in to the movement. This camp was more relaxed than the previous one, as many of the participants had attended the previous, more intense trip to the New Forest. A re-cap of the Module A essentials was carried out, as well as the Special People module which deals with those in the movement that have special requirements to take into account in order that they may fully engage with the programme.

The first ever Barnet District Explorer camp happens in under two weeks. A spy themed weekend aimed at all Explorer Scouts (14-18 year olds) in our new District. This will be the first chance that all the youngsters in this age will have had to get to know each other better. As well as a wide game, site activities, initiative excersises, mountain boarding there will be a race nice and a fancy dress disco with a live band. There is a flyer available for download here, and it has been on the unit programmes for a while now. Hopefully, this will be a great inaugral event - and just the start of many more!
I am sure there will be lots of amusing phots to download after the event... |

The new scheme for Young Leaders (YLs) has now been launched in the District. The aim is to provide a more consistent approach, which is something the County is also keen to do. The primary aims of the scheme are:
- Ensure we are meeting our requirements under POR
- Provide support and training for YLs
- Show proper appreciation for the work of YLs
***UPDATE - The forms/full info for the 'Basic' YL training camp to the New Forest is now online - find it in the Young Leaders Download Section ***
